Schools to be reopened next week Monday, CS Machogu Laments

Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu said sending workers and children to affected schools could endanger their lives.   The National Association of Sunday Parents has agreed to change the start date of classes in the affected areas.   

The government has postponed plans to reopen schools until Monday, May 6, 2024. Many schools have been damaged due to ongoing flooding.   He explained that it was necessary to postpone the reopening  because bringing workers and children to the affected areas would risk their lives.   

"The damage caused by the rains to some schools is so great that it would be foolish to endanger  students and teachers before insurmountable obstacles " 

According to  this measure, the Ministry of National Education decided to postpone the reopening of all schools. Machogu said that primary and secondary school has been postponed by one week and extended until Monday, May 6, 2024.   

On April 29 (today), the school is scheduled to reopen  . To mitigate the adverse impact of rain, CTC said the Agency will work with  organizations and stakeholders to provide regular updates on all education-related developments.   

The National Association of Sunday Parents has agreed to change the start date of classes in the affected areas.   Nearly 90 people have been confirmed dead so far, with many injured or missing, and  the weather service has warned of more heavy rainfall in the coming days.   

Eskimo Cobia, the secretary of the association, said that rain and floods affected many schools across the country.   For the safety of children and teachers, Kobia asked the government to conduct an analysis of schools affected by the rain and consider adjusting their opening days.  

 "We are monitoring the ongoing rainfall and working with the government to ensure the safety of  students when schools reopen for the second term." said. In the affected areas, victims were sleeping in nearby schools.   The Secretary General said that heavy rains endangered the lives of students by causing the closure of important roads, mostly in rural areas. 

  "How safe will students be going from home to school? That's a real concern, not  reopening schools," he said.   Kobia said that according to the organization's initial observations, many affected families  lost school supplies and clothes.
